Career prospects

After completing the Section Commander Course (SCC), you will be posted to a fire station as a Fire and Rescue Specialist. Once there, your career can develop along two distinct paths: Command Track or Specialist Track.

In the Command Track, you can expect to move up in rank in the various command appointments such as:
Section Commander
Instructor
Fire Biker
Assistant Rota Commander
Support Commander
Deputy Rota Commander
Unit Sergeant Major
Senior Instructor

In the Specialist Track, you can expect to branch out to specialised vocations that require unique skills not found in the general command appointments. To know more about the various specialist appointments available in the SCDF, click here.

Every staff in SCDF is encouraged to upgrade themselves academically. Training awards and study loans are available for promising Fire and Rescue Specialists.Those who obtain an undergraduate degree and have the calibre to become an officer will be promoted to hold Senior Officer appointments.

Home Affairs Learning & Growth
(HALO) Programme


Diploma holders who join the Home Team may be considered for full sponsorship for an undergraduate course in any of the three local universities after a minimum of two years of service. To qualify, the specialist must demonstrate excellent performance and have the potential to take on a Senior Officer role.

Specialists selected for the HALO Programme will continue to draw their full salary throughout the course of their studies. Upon graduation, the specialist will be promoted to the position of Senior Officer and will be placed on the senior officer scheme of service. For more information on the HALO Programme, please

Specialist Training.

HAZMAT Specialist

Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) units are trained in the
specialised detection and containment of hazardous
chemicals and toxins.

DART Specialist

The Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) is an
elite force formed to handle complex rescue and firefighting
incidents such as urban search and rescue, prolonged
firefighting, height and confined space operations, and water
rescue.

Fire Investigation Specialist (FITS)

The FITS is trained to apply scientific investigation methods
in probing into the causes of major fires, especially when
arson is suspected.

Fire Safety Specialist (FSS)

The FSS enforces the provisions in the Fire Safety Act to
reduce fire hazards. Their responsibilities include physical
site inspections and regular enforcement exercises.

Will I get regular pay during my Section Commander Course (SCC) in SCDF?

Yes. You will be paid the full salary for the 6-month Section Commander Course (SCC).

When is my next incremental date, after signing of the appointment letter with SCDF?

You will be eligible for next increment in 6 months of service if you have completed 2 years of full-time NS. For females, your next increment will be in 12 months' time.

What is the Scheme of Service for SCDF Fire and Rescue Specialist (FRS)?

As FRS, you will be appointed under the permanent scheme of service.

How long do I have to wait before I can apply to be in the Specialist career track in SCDF?

Preferably after at least one year. This is to ensure that you have accumulated adequate rescue and operation skills at the front line.
